A park in Bucks County was dedicated to the memory of a soldier who made the ultimate sacrifice serving in Iraq.
The Northampton Township Commons Park was officially renamed the Robert H. Dembowski, Jr. Veterans Memorial Park on Monday.
It was a bittersweet moment for the Dembowski family as the park was dedicated in honor of their loved one who died in Iraq almost a year ago to the day.
"It is named in his honor but it is for all veterans, in the weeks and months ahead, it will be something to drive by and see his name up there, we will see how that feels then," Robert's mother Fran said.
Dembowski, 20, was the first Northampton resident to die in Iraq.
"It's been great all the support we've had and now dedicating this corner, I'm sure he is looking down upon us, smiling today," Robert's brother Frank Holberg said.
Many veterans are hoping the park will serve as a reminder of what Memorial Day really means.
"God bless him and his family and this now sacred spot, it is a reminder for all people that look at his name on this wall and remind themselves that freedom is not free," Col. Daniel Rubini of the Northampton Veterans Committee said.
It is a place where fallen heroes like Robert will live on.
