The Coast Guard was called to Folcroft, Delaware County Wednesday afternoon to assist in the rescue of two PECO workers trapped in a cherry picker they were using to work on a utility pole.
The workers, identified as David Acree and Christopher Russell, were suspended approximately 130 feet in the air when their cherry picker lost power.
Both of the workers tied themselves to the utility pole as a safety precaution because of the force of the strong winds.
The Coast Guard chopper arrived on the scene at about 12:10 p.m. and hovered above the trapped workers. Crew members hoisted the men to safety, one at a time. The men were trapped for over two hours.
"The scary part for most of the guys below is when the Coast Guard came in for rescue and then they hooked them, they had to unhook from the poles," said Folcroft Police Chief Robert Ruskowski.
The strong winds and height played major challenges for Coast Guard rescuers.
"This is one of our more unusual cases provided that it was over land and it was literally trying to drop our rescue server on top of what is placed to a telephone pole," Coast Guard pilot Lt. Pete Taggeo said.
Both workers were airlifted via medical chopper to an area hospital. They were both treated and released.
