Forget the school of hard knocks. This is the school of hard rock.
Meet the Redwalls, a Chicago band with a Philly connection. Their management team is local and made up of college students.
"It's your job day in and day out and you're handling 20 credits at a time, and you're managing the release of a record," student/product Manager Anna Drozdowski said.
The Redwalls are part of the Mad Dragon Record Label, a label run by a class at Drexel University.
"The students work behind the scenes tirelessly day in and day out on behalf of the artists so they are on the recording label," Drexel University's Marcy Rauer Wagman said.
And the label and the band have hit the big time. The Redwalls made their television debut on David Letterman.
I get to tell my friends and family, 'Hey, you know what I've been working on since I got to Drexel and the Redwalls? Yeah, turn on Letterman," Drexel student Christianna Labuz said.
A spot on the Late Show is a huge accomplishment and started with a lot of hard work.
"In order to get to that point, the students work in distribution and they work in retail, and they talk to record stores and they talk to radio promoters," Wagman said.
They are college students, breaking into a tough business with a curriculum that goes far beyond the classroom.
"I think it's one of the biggest things we've accomplished thus far for our artists and for ourselves," Drozdowski said.
