The Red Cross has stepped in to provide relief to the 375 displaced residents of the 168 Conshohocken apartments that were ravaged by massive fires on Wednesday.
The 8-alarm fire began at the Riverwalk at Millennium luxury apartment development in the 200 block of Washington Street in Conshohocken at about 5 p.m. Wednesday.
Officials said the flames broke out at an unoccupied building that was under construction. The building was only approximately 20-percent complete and fire protection was not yet installed.
The flames however became so massive that they engulfed neighboring buildings, many of which had been inhabited for some time. The blaze destroyed the many of the resident's homes and now the Red Cross is helping them cope.
The relief organization has set up an emergency location for tenants to get food and information regarding recovery, the humbling realization for many people is that they will be forced to stay with friends or family.
Displaced residents will be meeting with officials to discuss possible temporary living solutions in hotels or other lodging.
The SPCA offices on Ridge Pike have offered to house many residents' four-legged friends on an emergency basis until their owners can find more permanent residence.
