University of Pennsylvania
announced plans Tuesday to turn 14 acres of riverside asphalt into green space
by 2011.
Penn President Amy
Gutmann says the $40 million Penn Park project will link the University
City and Center
City neighborhoods while
creating a new gateway to the campus.
Plans for the park
include four athletic fields, a dozen tennis courts and a raised central plaza
with views of the downtown skyline. The park will be on the site of parking
lots once owned by the United
States Postal Service.
The park is a key piece
of Penn's 30-year plan for campus development.
