Fallen Local Soldiers Honored At Penn's Landing

PHILADELPHIA (CBS 3) ― A memorial ceremony was held at the Korean Memorial at Penn's Landing for local soldiers who have fallen fighting in current conflicts.

A blank portion of the landmark was dedicated to soldiers from the Delaware Valley who gave their lives fighting overseas in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Emotions ran high as veterans, area residents and city officials unveiled the names of 62 fallen heroes.

"You will never be forgotten at all," said Mayor Michael Nutter.

Iraq war veteran and State Representative Bryan Lentz said the Memorial Day holiday is important to both veterans and those currently involved in active duty.

"It gives you strength and it lets you know that your sacrifice and the sacrifice of your fellow soldiers will not be forgotten.

Lance Corporal John Byrd, who gave his life while serving in October 2004, was among those honored on the new memorial. His wife, Jessica, was pregnant with his child at the time of his death.

"I feel honored that they took their space and actually gave us something to have here," she said.

The Korean Memorial was originally dedicated on June 22, 2002 to honor 610 local servicemen who died in combat during the Korean War.
