Lawn Decoration Controversy Brewing In Paulsboro

PAULSBORO, N.J. (CBS 3) ― The saying goes -- "Beauty is in the eye of the beholder." However, some residents in Gloucester County may not agree with that expression.

What two Paulsboro homeowners see as lawn decorations, their neighbors see as serious eye-sores.

The home on Beacon Avenue slightly resembles a garden statue company more than a residential property.

It is not the first time that the home, owned by twins Gerald and John Hubbs, has drawn negative attention.

In 2001, police dug up the lawn and driveway after the twin's mother, Ethel, disappeared. Police said her body was not found during the search.

However, both received probation; one for weapons offenses and the other for stealing electricity.

The Hubbs' next-door neighbor believes the display violates zoning ordinances and decreases her property value.

"There are likely some permits that are outstanding, but they are mainly for electrical hook-ups and things of that nature and not with placement of a statue," Paulsboro Mayor John Burzichelli said.

Burzichelli explained nothing in the town's ordinances outlaws yard statues.

"Sometimes these things occur between neighbors and that's a hard thing for government to interact with," Burzichelli said.

A realtor told CBS3 that the display would not decrease or increase the value of properties nearby, but could discourage potential buyers.
