A young Pennsylvania State Representative is taking a leave from politics to serve his country.
Nick Miccarelli III is set to deploy to Iraq as a National Guardsman. Miccarelli, a Republic from Delaware County, was sworn in on January 6.
"The response has been overwhelming positive, really, we've gotten so many well-wishes," Miccarelli said.
The 26-year-old lawmaker is no stranger to dangerous duty having already served in Kosovo and once already in Iraq.
"I'll be a door gunner in a Chinook helicopter, it's a CH-47," Miccarelli explained.
While overseas, Miccarelli's staff will ensure that questions and concerns will be addressed in the district.
"It means a lot to us as veterans to make sure that Nicks knows that we're behind him," Media Mayor Bob McMahon said.
Miccarelli said he is ready to leave and prepared to serve, but he admitted saying goodbye is never easy.
"It's really been tough on my family and to have the people of this district really support them has been heart-warming for me," Miccarelli said.
Miccarelli plans to leave for deployment on February 3 and expects to return home sometime early next year.
