N.J. Pays Price For Punishing Drug Offenders

TRENTON (AP) ― New Jersey is paying a price for punishing nonviolence drug offenders.

A Drug Policy Alliance study released today finds the state could save millions by changing sentencing.

The study shows alternatives to jail for nonviolent drug offenders would let more money be invested in the state's poorest families and communities.

The study shows the state spends $331 million per year jailing nonviolent drug offenders.

It alliance says the state is also losing taxable income by sending nonviolent drug offenders to jail and limiting their future employment.

The alliance says nonviolent drug offenders should get treatment and supervision.
