A legendary South Philadelphia diner has a new owner for the first time since it was founded 70 years ago.
The Melrose Diner was sold Wednesday by 59-year-old Richard Kubach, who started working at the diner when he was a 19-year-old.
Kubach sold the diner to Michael Petrogiannis and his three brothers, who own nine other diners in the Philadelphia area. Kubach said he plans to retire.
Kubach's father opened the Melrose Diner during the Depression and it has been a mainstay in South Philadelphia ever since.
Manager Tony Cortese said the reason for the diner's long history was the people and the employees. Cortese said five employees worked at the establishment for more than 50 years.
Many long time customers are sad to see the change of ownership.
"The Melrose is like a family affair, we all know each other," one loyal customer said
