Body Of Missing Student Found In Pa. Creek
SCRANTON, Pa. (AP) ―
A body found in a creek was identified as that of a college student missing since early March, officials said Monday.
The body of Matthew Grendel, 20, of Scranton, was found in Roaring Brook on Sunday, 78 days after he was separated from friends following a St. Patrick's Day parade. The badly decomposed body was discovered by a group playing in the creek 50 to 100 yards upstream of the Harrison Avenue Bridge, city Police Chief David Elliott said Sunday.
Lackawanna County Deputy Coroner Joseph Swoboda identified the body as that of Grendel on Monday and said the cause of death was accidental drowning. Swoboda said the autopsy revealed a substantial amount of water in Grendel's lungs and that no foul play was involved.
Grendel, a junior at the University of Sciences in Philadelphia, had been missing since telling a friend he was going to a party at the University of Scranton on March 10.
Police, firefighters, family members and volunteers searched the Scranton area in the following days. The search was called off two weeks later when nothing turned up.
