Northampton Co. Students Diagnosed With MRSA
NORTHAMPTON, Pa. (CBS 3) ―
Three students in Northampton County are being treated for the drug resistant skin infection known as MRSA.
A letter from the Northampton Area School District was sent to parents informing them that three high school students have been diagnosed with Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA).
MRSA is usually transmitted by direct skin-to-skin contact or contact with shared items or surfaces that have come into contact with someone else's infection.
According to the letter, "the reported students are receiving medical care, following their doctor's advice, and taking necessary precautions. We appreciate the parents', the students', and health care workers' communication with us for the health and wellness of all concerned."
"Although the Center for Disease Control (CDC) states that "it should not be necessary to inform the entire school community," we believe that sharing information in a straight forward manner will serve to keep you informed and enable you to help your children practice preventative measures to maintain their health."
Officials said the high school has been disinfected as a precaution.
Good hygiene and hand washing are simple measures to prevent the spread of the MRSA strain.
