Protestors were seen outside libraries throughout Philadelphia Saturday
afternoon to protest the planned city budget cuts.
With the Mayor's proposed cuts, 11 libraries in the city
of Philadelphia
will be closed, but some neighbors are refusing to give up.
Protestors held signs and rallied before seven libraries
throughout the city in the hundreds, hoping to persuade the Mayor.
The Kingsessing Library on South Street is set to be closed. Kingsessing
has been in Philadelphia
since World War I and neighbors are crushed to hear they might lose a piece of
the city's history.
"We need to have this library here because it means so
much to this community," said rally coordinator Greg Benjamin.
Many of the protestors are hoping to compromise with the
city by having the libraries be open only three days a week to save money.
"It's not perfect library service, but its shared
sacrifice," said Amy Dougherty of the Friends of the Free Library.
