Six-Year-Old Cancer Survivor Giving Back
(CBS 3)
A grateful little girl who survived cancer is giving back. She has teamed up with celebrity chefs, the 6-year-old has written a cookbook, where she whips up her favorite kid-friendly recipes and she says she did it to raise awareness of childhood cancer.
6-year-old Katie Harr and her mother Patty whipped up a batch of flourless peanut butter cookies inside their North Wales home and it is one of her favorite recipes from her cookbook,
Katie's Cooking: A Cookbook Celebrating Life after Childhood Cancer , which features recipes donated by celebrity chefs, including Emeril Lagasse and Rachel Ray.
"It was Katie's idea, when she ended her treatment, it was two years two months long, my husband and I asked her how she wanted to celebrate ending her treatment and she said she wanted to do a cookbook to help other kids with cancer," said Katie's mother, Patty.
Doctors diagnosed Katie with acute lumphoblastic leukemia three years ago and she could not walk during her chemotherapy treatments because it caused compression fractures in her spine but it was the time off her feet that her passion for cooking began.
"We ended up watching a lot of food network shows and cooking shows, and reading cookbooks," said Patty.
The cookbook not only features 782 recipes, but pictures of kids from all over the world battling various types of childhood cancer and Katie is featured on the cover and the appetizer page.
"We've got 75 children photos in here and stories some of the families gave us quotes, little quotes that the kids may have said or said to get them through their treatments," added Patty.
Nearly 500 of the cookbooks have been sold since its release March 19th. They sell for 24-dollars and half the money from each book goes to benefit children with cancer.
