SPCA: Malnourished Horses Found In Philadelphia
PHILADELPHIA (CBS 3) ―
Investigators discovered dozens of malnourished horses, including one
that had died, inside a stable in North Philadelphia Tuesday.
According to the SPCA, the horses were discovered at an illegal horse stable in the 2600 block of Fletcher Street.
Officials from the SPCA said they received and anonymous call reporting the nearly block of stables housing dozens of horses, were rundown. The SPCA along with the Department of License's and Inspections responded to the scene and found mountains of manure, malnourished horses and a partially buried carcass.
"There is just piles and piles of manure and horses running loose in all kinds of debris," said Elaine Skypala of the Pennsylvania SPCA. "It's very dangerous for the horses, a lot them are in bad condition and they just keep refilling with new horses as we move them out."
Only one of the stables was licensed to house 11 horses.
"At the time we found the remains, we observed approximately 20 to 25 horses in various areas out here, in turnouts there were absolutely filthy," said SPCA Agent George Bengal.
The SPCA said they plan to remove the maltreated horses and place them in other stables.
Charges are pending the outcome of the investigation.
