Firefighter Honored Over A Century After His Death

PHILADELPHIA (CBS 3) ― Members of the Philadelphia Fire Department held an honorary ceremony Wednesday for a fellow firefighter killed in the line of duty over a century ago.

Horseman Walter Shemled, 37, died while fighting a placed at a grocery store near 3rd and Bainbridge Streets just before 9 p.m. on December 26, 1898.

Officials said Shemled, a five-year veteran, had rescued several people from the blaze before collapsing. He was pronounced dead on the way to Pennsylvania Hospital.

Over 100 years after his death, the Fire Department dedicated a plaque to Shemled's sacrifice at 4th and Bainbridge.

The event marks the 33rd memorial placed in the city for the 286 firefithers killed in the line of duty since 1871.
