Philadelphia police have seized nearly $1.5 million worth of heroin, a record for the city, and police said the drugs walked into the area, inside the shoes of suspects.
Police said drugs were recovered from a home near "G" Street and Hunting Park Avenue in Northeast Philadelphia and four suspects are now in custody.
"Well, you're talking about 8.5 pounds of heroin. It is quiet significant, it's worth 1.4 million dollars," said Philadelphia Police Captain Chris Werner. "It is arguably the largest seizure that I'm aware of, made by the Philadelphia Police."
The suspects allegedly used extraordinary means to traffic the drugs from Columbia and New York. Police said the dealers molded the heroin into insoles of shoes, in an attempt to walk the drugs past police.
The heroin in one insole, police said, had a street value of approximately $150K.
"The heroin's in their shoes. It is not in the car. The officer checks their car, he's not necessarily going to check the inside of someone's shoe for heroin," said Werner.
Police said the suspects had a whole James Bond series of devices used for hiding the drugs inside the Northeast Philadelphia home including secret compartments powered by electronic motors. The compartments were used to hide drugs in the car and walls of the home.
Police said the suspects also face charges for buying social security information to bring other people into the country illegally to participate in the drug ring.
The seizure, police said, is further evidence Philadelphia has become a destination city for drugs, and not just a transshipment point, as it had been in the past.
