Good Friday Celebrated Around The World

by Alycia Lane
PHILADELPHIA (CBS 3) ― Good Friday is a day of mourning for Christians around the world. CBS 3 Anchor Alycia Lane reports how the Holy day is being remembered.

On this Holy day, Christians hold services to remember Jesus' suffering and death on the cross. It's a day revered by many in many different ways.

In Vatican City, the head of the Roman Catholic Church, Pope Benedict the Sixteenth, said mass in Saint Peter's Basilica.

In Philadelphia, Cardinal Justin Rigali led a service for the faithful at the Cathedral Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul.

Catholics in Mexico joined in the dramatization of what Christ went through as a way of atoning for their sins.

"It is part of the vow. We are doing our penitence as well as asking for something," said one participant in the procession.

In a similar "show of faith" Filipinos take the torture of Jesus to heart, beating their bare backs with whips. It is a symbolic moment for Catholics living there and tourists who come to watch.

"It's something that we don't have in our country, that sort of extreme, intense, physical belief," said Australian tourist David Griggs.

But it is a "strong belief" which prompted an aquatic procession to mark the religious holiday in the Granada islands.

"It is a tradition for us. We trust in the will of God and we hope he will help us reflect and push the country forward," said procession organizer Alfredo Valle.

In Jerusalem, the Holy Land, pilgrims marched to a shrine marking the site of where Jesus is said to be buried.

Back home, the start of Good Friday began with a breakfast by the YMCA of Camden County. Tickets sold helped to support needy families, a true example of what being a Christian is all about.
