Heroes Honored At 24th Firefighters Awards Day
PHILADELPHIA (CBS 3) ―
The Philadelphia Fire Department held its 24th annual Awards Day Ceremony at the Fire Academy located at 5200 Pennypack Street on Friday morning.
Fire Commissioner Lloyd Ayers was on hand to present Partnership Awards to Bravo Health, Brown's Family ShopRite, Cozen O'Connor and the Philadelphia Second Alarmers for supporting fire prevention efforts in the city of Philadelphia.
Ayers commended specific companies for their efforts in community outreach.
"As we examine the multi-faceted role of the modern firefighter and paramedic it is incumbent upon us to recognize that community outreach as a tool for fire prevention is as important as and perhaps even more important than fire suppression.
Teaching our fellow citizens to take primary responsibility for their own safety enables us to better allocate our available resources," said Commissioner Ayers.
The Albert Redles Community Service Award was given to Engine Company 40, Ladder Company 4 and Medic 19, located at 65th Street & Woodland Avenue, for continuing efforts to enlighten their communities through outreach programs.
In addition to the firefighters honored at the ceremony, a Philadelphia Police Officer also received a Merit Award, two civilians were presented with Letters of Commendation and four others received Letters of Appreciation.
