Investigators are trying to determine what led to a massive fire that
destroyed six beach front condominiums in Sea
Isle City
Saturday.
Flames and a massive cloud of ash could be seen for miles as fire engulfed
the unoccupied vacation homes near 65th Street
and Pleasure Avenue.
Witnesses said the fire spread quickly, making it difficult for firefighters
to save the burning structures.
"Before the firemen got here two houses were gone. The house in
the middle had collapsed after about 15 minutes," eyewitness Carl Miller
said.
Volunteer firefighters from Sea Isle, Avalon, and Ocean View worked to
prevent the spread of the fire as winds whipped throughout the area.
Ironically, two of the three duplex condos had been rebuilt after they were
destroyed a 1997 fire on the same lots.
"At that time three houses burned down and it was the north house that
burnt down," Miller said. "It's just unbelievable that the house would burn
down twice in a period of ten years."
A firefighter suffered a broken leg after falling from a fire engine. He
was transported to Cape Regional
Medical Center
for treatment. No other injuries were reported.
The cause of the destructive fire remains under investigation.
