New Details Emerge In Fairmount Park Rapist Case

PHILADELPHIA (CBS 3) ― In an attempt to catch the Fairmount Park rapist, investigators have released never before known details of his most recent attack.

On August 11, 2007, the suspect dragged a woman off of a jogging path in Pennypack Park in Northeast Philadelphia and raped her at knife-point.

Captain John Darby said the victim told investigators as she was being viciously assaulted, she could hear people nearby talking and listening to music.

"Literally tells us that during this assault, she hears music, she hears voices in the background," Captain Darby said.

Captain Darby said the possible eyewitnesses were at a band stand where neighbors often gather for concerts during summer evenings.

It is Captain Darby's' hope that if someone took pictures with their cell phone or camera, the rapist may be visible on the picture.

"We ask people to browse through those photographs they might have taken," Captain Darby said.

As police try to generate new interest with a new composite sketch showing body scars, the amount of reward for the rapist has dropped dramatically.

In 2003, when the suspect first struck by attacking two women and murdering medical student Rebecca Park, the reward peaked at over $20,000. However, it now stands at $5,500.

"The more the reward is posted, the more likelihood we may get the information," John Appledorn of the Citizen's Crime Commission said.

If you have any information, you are urged to contact police.
