Young voters could be a major factor at the polls for the
first time in years and a Haverford
College student is trying
to make it happen.
Freshman, David Burnstein is using his video camera to
hopefully inspire young voters to make their way to the ballot box.
"I don't think politicians are really connected to the
youth," said one Haverford
College student.
Burnstein, 19, has been interviewing college students, high
school students, politicians and actors since he was 16 for a
documentary about young voters in the 2008 election.
The result is the documentary and the movement: "18 in '08".
"I think young people are frustrated with the political
process. They're not apathetic. They're not uninterested in the world around
them," said Burnstein.
"18 in '08" reveals young people are interested in a variety
of issues, but prefer social activism to politics.
"In this political process we ask them to do something and
it takes forever. There are bills and committees and all of these intricate processes,"
said Burnstein.
In 1972 when the voting age was lowered to 18-years-old 52
percent of voters between 18 and 24 cast ballots; however young voter
participation has declined since then.
David wants this statistic to change in the 2008 election.
"What we believe in 18 in '08 is that young people want to
be asked to be involved," said Burnstein.
