A suspect in the murder of a Philadelphia Police officer had a long and violent criminal history, police said.
Daniel Giddings, 27, shot and killed 30-year-old Officer Patrick McDonald following a foot pursuit in North Philadelphia on Tuesday, September 23.
Police said Giddings was fatally wounded during a shootout with a second officer, 35-year-old Richard Bowes.
The tragic crime is not the first time Giddings had a run in with the law.
"This is an individual who was stopped that has a long record, extensive record, had some contact with police about two, three weeks ago," Police Commissioner Charles Ramsey said.
In August 1998, police said Giddings shot a man in both legs during an attempted carjacking and robbery. He was sentenced to 6-12 years in prison for the crime.
During his 10-year incarceration, police said Giddings was kicked out of two prisons for bad behavior before finishing his time in a third. He apparently served more than 530 days in the hole during his time served.
Philadelphia Police Captain James Clark said Giddings was wanted for assaulting several officers following a traffic stop on August 27, 2008.
Giddings fled on foot after being pulled over for numerous traffic infractions. He ran into a home and was confronted by officers in a second floor bedroom.
Clark said Giddings got on his knees as if he were surrendering, but instead, he elbowed an officer in the face and assaulted several others before escaping.
The officers were treated for injuries to their back, neck and arms.
Investigators tracked a .45 semi-automatic handgun used by Giddings in Officer McDonald's murder to a South Carolina man. ATF agents are questioning the man, identified as Jason Mack, for suspicion of straw purchases.
Police said another gun purchased by Mack was apparently used in a West Philadelphia robbery.
