N.J. Mayor Pleads Guilty To Corruption Charges

TRENTON (AP) ― Passaic Mayor Samuel Rivera pleads guilty to corruption charges.

Rivera's Friday plea comes after he had been accused of accepting $5,000 in cash to influence local government contracts.

He was among 12 people—including 11 public officials— arrested for taking bribes from companies that offered insurance and roofing services to schools and municipalities.

Rivera becomes the eighth person among that group to either plead guilty or be convicted. Trials are pending on the other four.

Rivera is to be sentenced on August 15.

The investigation began in 2006 amid evidence of corruption in the Pleasantville school district.
