Teen 'Boosts' Funds To Fight Childhood Cancer
RIVERSIDE, N.J. (CBS 3) ―
A 16-year-old from Riverside, New Jersey has become famous for his courageous stand against cancer.
"You either Know Everett or you know of Everett. He's just an inspiration to everyone in town," Family friend, Lisa Kempton said.
Everett Dunlap's latest claim to fame is his "Boost" stand. It's named after the locally made energy drink, "Boost" and the drinks are donated by Boost Cafe owner, Bruce Behmke.
"Just to see Everett get excited just brings joy to everybody," Behmke told CBS3.
Everett and his troop of helpers started the stand last fall and they've been going strong despite a few bumps in the road.
Kempton explained, "Their electric was turned off a few weeks ago and his father lost his job about two months ago."
Everett Dunlap Sr. has since landed a new job and the power in the house is back on. But with mounting bills, times in the Dunlap household are still tough. Even still, the Dunlaps labor away at Everett's Boost Stand to help others.
"We know the struggles that these families are going through and know they're struggling more than us," Everett's mother, Aimee said.
Everett's father added, "A lot of people are less fortunate than we are and pretty much this is what Everett wants. Everett wants to help other people."
Everett chose to help other people by using the stand to raise money for other families with children battling cancer. The 16-year-old was diagnosed with brain cancer when he was just 6-years-old. This October 6th marks the ten year anniversary since the diagnosis. He has had two tumors removed but doctors cannot remove a third tumor because of its location in Everett's brain.
"He's still fighting. He still wants to fight and we're going to stick by him," Everett's mother said.
For years to come, the Dunlaps are prepared to fight the battle with support from friends and even strangers but above all, with strength from the local hero.
Everett's dad concluded, "You can have a rough day and you come home to see your son smiling, still around and basically any other problem means nothing."
