Boathouse Row Club Shut Down
PHILADELPHIA (CBS 3) ―
A historic state-owned building on Boathouse Row, which has served as a home to rowing teams for decades, has been shut down by the Department of Licenses and Inspections.
The East Park Canoe House on Kelly Drive, commonly known as 'The Canoe Club', is typically surrounded by eager rowers, but now it is circled by fencing pending the closure of its doors.
After an examination of the building, established in 1915, the Department of L & I deemed it unsafe.
Temple University, Father Judge, North Catholic and La Salle College High Schools have been forced to move approximately 100 boats housed in the Canoe Club by February 15.
With practice beginning next week, the rowing community is trying to help the now homeless teams, but there is little room to house the massive amount of equipment kept in the now closed club.
"The timing of it is really bad because we would probably be on the water next week, but it is difficult without boats, as you can imagine. We would be a swim team and not a rowing team," said Gavin White, Tempe Crew Coach.
Teams are scheduled to meet with the Fairmount Park Commission Thursday evening to discuss the surprise closure.
