Bikini Poster Sparking Controversy In Tuckerton

TUCKERTON, N.J. (CBS 3) ― A controversy is brewing in one Jersey shore town over a racy poster that features bikini clad women in warm winter boots.

The ad, which is featured in the front window of Cheater 5's Skate & Surf shop in Tuckerton, caused some heated emotions at a council meeting Wednesday evening.

The poster was not on the agenda, but a local reporter asked what the fuss was about.

"That is the standard argument you would hear with regard to that poster would be that 'it's degrading to women' and that's exactly what I did, so it was tongue and cheek," Councilwoman Liz Moritz told CBS3.

The fact is Moritz is not personally offended by the poster, after all, her son is a surfer.

"The problem with the poster in my mind is that it doesn't fit into what we are trying to accomplish regarding zoning and the revitalization of Main Street," Moritz said. "An old wooden surfboard I think would really fit quite nicely."

Tuckerton is considered an historic landmark borough and Moritz is working to restore scenic beauty to Route 9, the Main Street.

Regina Brown owns the shop with her husband Dennis, who has roots in Tuckerton dating back to the 1700's.

"What do you do when you walk by Victoria Secret, do you have a stroke?" said Brown. "I will not take the poster down, it's been good advertisement for us."

Moritz wants everyone to look at the whole picture.

"They're next to a bed and breakfast," Moritz said.

When asked about the poster, the owner of the bed and breakfast replied: "They look very nice to me, it's fine with me, I have no problem with it," Lorenzo Lauro said.

Cheater 5's does not know if it will be forced to remove the poster from storefront.

The next meeting aimed at removing sign clutter in the borough is scheduled for Monday night.
