Warning Issued Concerning 'Beach Bombs'

NARBERTH, Pa. (CBS 3) ― Authorities are warning beachgoers about the dangers of bringing home potentially explosive illegal souvenirs from the shore.

A U.S. Military mortar round was brought to the Narberth Police Department Monday while last month, the Montgomery County bomb squad retrieved one from an Upper Dublin home.

Investigators said they are the same kind of dangerous, live mortar rounds discovered on Jersey Shore beaches. The rounds may appear rusty and non-functional, but authorities said they still have explosive potential.

"This munitions or mortar shell is equivalent to three sticks of dynamite. Dropping them can set them off, riding them in a car can set them off or burying them," Montgomery County Sheriff John Durante said.

The munitions have been washing up by the hundreds along the Long Beach Island shoreline for the past few years. Last year, the discovery of dozens of shells forced an area beach to close while the rounds were properly disposed.

Durante said if anyone has a potentially explosive mortar round at home as a souvenir from the shore, they are urged to contact their local police department.
