Obama Draws Big Crowd In Delaware
WILMINGTON (AP) ―
Democrat Barack Obama electrified a crowd of some 20,000 people at a rally in downtown Wilmington, making a rare visit to Delaware by a presidential candidate.
City officials say the crowd that gathered at Rodney Square on Sunday to hear Obama's message of change was the largest in the city in recent memory, exceeding the number that turned out for New Year's Eve festivities.
Obama visited Delaware just days after his wife, Michelle, drew large crowds of her own in Wilmington and Dover.
Delaware's two Democratic gubernatorial candidates, state treasurer Jack Markell and lieutenant governor John Carney put aside their political rivalry to join together in introducing the Illinois senator.
Carney says Obama's visit could result in a huge dividend on Tuesday, when Delaware's 15 Democratic delegates are up for grabs in Super Tuesday voting.
Obama is locked in a tight race with New York Sen. Hillary Clinton, who has not campaigned in Delaware.
