Drivers are now digging deeper to drive the AC Expressway.
There is no grace period. Drivers will now pay more to travel the Atlantic City Expressway. The toll increases went into effect on Tuesday at 12.01 a.m.
Drivers like tech student Jessica Henderson say the timing of the toll hike is rough in an already tough economy.
"Between school and work, the increase is definitely hurting my pockets that is for sure," said Henderson.
Drivers at the Egg Harbor toll plaza will now pay $ 3 dollars, up from $2. Pleasantville tolls jump from $0.50 cents to $0.75 cents. Entrance and exit ramps that used to be $0.50 cents are now $0.75, and ramps that we're $0.25 cents, you'll now pay $0.40. All the signs have been updated.
Casino employee Sid Soloff says the state should stop burdening hardworking New Jerseyans, and look elsewhere to trim the fat for road improvements.
"I travel to Borgata five days a week to work there, it's outrageous this increase will pay for things that don't mean much to me." said Soloff of Sicklerville.
The South Jersey Transportation Authority reminds us the AC Expressway is an evacuation route, and road improvement projects not only create jobs, but save commuters time and money.
'It's a minor increase considering $205 million we will reinvest in this roadway, that will take drivers to their destination safer and quicker and not hold them up in traffic burning fuel," said Sharon Gordon with SJTA.
E-ZPass customers will get a 25 percent break at the tolls but there's a catch
it's only at Egg Harbor, and Pleasantville toll plazas, only on Friday and Saturday nights from 5-7pm and the discount lasts from now until May 2009 to promote tourism in Atlantic City.
