Health: Treatment To Rid Of Wrinkles
PHILADELPHIA (CBS 3) ―
Linda Westphal is liking what she sees in the mirror. Being the owner of a Manayunk sports store, looking young and healthy is important.
"You know, I work out. I eat healthy. I take care of myself, but there's some things that you just can't fight," said Linda.
She's referring to those pesky, little wrinkles that Dr. Kevin Cross with Deme in Philadelphia has a new treatment for.
"It's very exciting," said Dr. Cross.
It's called Dysport, the first FDA approved competitor to Botox. It works the same way, paralyzing muscles that cause wrinkles. But the formulation is slightly different.
"This is a great product for the patient who has tried Botox unsuccessfully," said Dr. Cross.
He's among the first in the Philadelphia area to get Dysport. He says it can also work more quickly, in a day or two, while Botox can take weeks in some people.
"You see the effect quicker, so I'm excited about it," said Linda.
"I think it's great. I mean, the more competition I think the better the products," said Susan Harmelin, an accountant who is also one of the first in Philadelphia to get injections of Dysport.
She thinks it's about time Botox had some competition, which theoretically should reduce the price eventually. Currently both products cost between $250 and $1,500.
"Competition is always a good thing," said Dr. Cross.
Susan and Linda are both thrilled with the subtle results.
"I started getting people coming in saying wow you look great. What did you do? You look terrific," said Linda.
The hope is that Dysport will last longer than Botox, more than six to twelve months, before repeated injections are needed. The side effects are similar, some minor and temporary redness, swelling or bruising.
