Parental Advise From The Mamapedia
If only kids came with their own instruction book. Any new parent will tell you, knowing how to best care for your child isn't always obvious. Now, there's a new site offering help from folks that know best, other moms.
Mother of two under two, Megan Smith hasn't always known what to do.
"As a new mom, you don't know about all these products that are out there or places to go," said Smith.
Asking family members isn't always helpful.
"I asked my mom about a car seat, they didn't have a car seat, they didn't use car seats with us," Smith said.
So this Glenside mom turned to the internet for answers and found Mamapedia - a virtual encyclopedia of Mommy knowledge.
"You post a question and you get answers the next day," she told us.
Questions range from what to do about biting to child care issues. Fellow moms post answers to the site for all to see - creating a database of information.
"A lot of times I find things that I've gone through that I can answer. So it's nice to be able to share your experience too with somebody.
Recently Megan had a question about how to give medicine to her youngest daughter.
"I got a lot of creative answers from the website and I found something that worked for us," said Smith.
She now uses a syringe instead of trying to put medicine in a bottle that her daughter didn't always finish.
You can search by topic or age. Anyone can browse, but you have to do the free sign up to be able to post comments on the site.
"It's fast, it's reliable, and it's other moms giving you answers to things they have experience with," said Smith.
And between the sleepless nights and runny noses, it's nice to know something is easy.
