'Hungry Girl' Creates Snacks Under 200 Calories

PHILADELPHIA (CBS 3) ― One of the most popular diet books out there isn't really a diet book at all. It's a collection of recipes that taste sinful without being sinful. And as CBS 3's Natasha Brown shows us, it was made by a woman who couldn't stop snacking.

To these women, Lisa Lillien is a recipe rock star.

"She gives you recipes that you're gonna like!" said one fan.

Lisa is the publishing phenomenon known as Hungry Girl.

Hundreds of Hungry Girl fans showed up at this book signing in West Chester. One was Janet Coulter of Trenton, who lost 140 pounds. She credits diet, exercise, and Hungry Girl's recipes.

Lillien said, "People definitely want to eat the foods they wanna eat, foods like pizza, French fries, brownies, and yet they still want to wear their cute jeans. So that is what Hungry Girl helps achieve."

Lisa Lillien's latest recipe book is 200 Under 200 -- that's 200 recipes under 200 calories.

"There are definitely ways to make anything and everything you want to eat low-calorie and low-fat," said Lillien. "It's about finding those key products that can help you achieve those goals. "

She scours supermarkets and food stores for her ingredients to bring a sinful taste to sin-free snacks.

"These are tofu shirataki noodles. They are life-changing," said Lillien. "I had given up pasta, because pasta has a lot of calories. These are made with tofu and yam flour. This whole bag has 40 calories."

More examples:
Almond milk has half the calories of skim with a lot more flavor.
Laughing Cow cheese can be used as a substitute for fettuccini sauce.
One of her favorite ingredients is Fiber One cereal.

"I think one of the coolest things I ever did was take Fiber One, put it in a blender, turn it into like a bread crumb consistency, add some spices, onion powder, garlic powder, cayenne, and then you can faux fry anything. So basically, you just bake it," said Lillien.

Hungry Girl book sales are beating doctors and nutritionists. Lillien is neither -- just a woman who likes to snack, and who wants her fans to as well.
