Your Money Team: Charitable Shopping

PHILADELPHIA (CBS 3) ― It's supposed to be the season of giving, but this year those who depend on donations are getting less attention. That includes the local pets at the PSPCA and children making incredible progress at Shriners Hospital in Philadelphia.

"We are concerned," Director of Development Terry Diamond said.

Diamond explained it's especially tough now since they don't get any government funding. She says the down economy is leaving struggling families with no extra money for charity.

That's why Shriners tries to help families help them by offering an alternative way to give. She directs them to a Web site called good shop. The URL is www.goodshop.com.

Their slogan is: "You Shop, We Give" because a percentage of everything bought through that Web site goes to the charity of your choice.

More than 64,000 charities and schools are signed up and waiting for your donations.

We at CBS 3 made sure your money is going to the charities you select, and can report that good shop is a totally legit way to do a good deed.

Both the PCPCA and Shriners Hospital confirmed they have received checks from good shop donated by matching funds just from shopping.

How much is matched depends on where you shop.

For example, Apple donates one percent, but if you shop through eBay, up to 37.5 percent of what you purchased could be matched and given to your favorite charity.

It's a win-win: A gift for your loved one, and your favorite charity.

To give without giving this holiday just go to www.goodshop.com, and once you're there type in the charity you want to give to and make sure it's on their list. Then all you have to do is start shopping!
