Two years ago Beverly Russell was told she had a brain aneurysm behind her eye that could burst at any time, potentially killing her.
"I just hate to think that that my kids would be without me so young. And but they would survive. They would. But it was scary. It was just scary," said Beverly.
The traditional treatment coils used to fill the bulging artery wall and a stent to strengthen it weren't enough. So doctors used a new FDA approved liquid glue to fill Beverly's odd shaped aneurysm.
It's called Liquid Onyx. The glue becomes solid so blood can't enter the aneurysm, putting pressure on weakened artery walls and burst.
"So what we did was from the groin we inserted plastic tube all the way up to her brain aneurysm and injected the glue," said Dr. Satoshi Tateshima, a Neurosurgeon.
Beverly's aneurysm used to be the size of a strawberry. Now it's completely filled in with the liquid glue.
"I believe this is it. I think her aneurysm is cured," said Dr. Tateshima.
Beverly is waiting for more tests to be sure it's fixed, but she's hopeful.
"I want it over. I hope this did it. Hope this did it," said Beverly.
Doctors at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital here in Philadelphia are among the first surgeons in the United States to perform the procedure.
