Health: LIVESTRONG Challenge
PHILADELPHIA (CBS 3) ―
33-year-old John Malley is training around his North Wales neighborhood getting ready to ride 45 miles this Sunday in the Livestrong Challenge.
"I always joke it took me getting cancer to step up and do this," said John.
He was diagnosed with testicular cancer last year, like the founder of Livestrong Lance Armstrong.
"You see this gigantic sports figure who overcomes it, and ya know it's very inspiring," said John.
His daughter Erin was eight months old when he was first diagnosed. Now his wife Chrissy is 16 weeks pregnant, after in vitro fertilization. And he had sperm frozen, before the treatments to keep their options open for the future.
"I think it's important that people realize there are alternatives out there. Even if it makes you sterile, you can still have a family," said John.
He had surgery and chemotherapy at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, where their Living Well After Cancer program is a member of the Livestrong Excellence Network.
"It's definitely beneficial, and it's a great resource for people to help deal with the big weight of what they're dealing with," said John.
John's riding in memory of his friend, Joe Madeline, who died of lung cancer at 31.
Some of the money raised on Sunday will be going to Penn's Abramson Cancer Center. The challenge starts at Montgomery County College in Blue Bell.
