Health: The Economy & Your Skin
PHILADELPHIA (CBS 3) ―
Laura Sheehy worries about money and the troubled economy, and she sees it on her face with red, itchy flare-ups.
"You get overwhelmed with the big picture today," said Laura.
Dr. Amy Wechsler, author of "The Mind-Beauty Connection," says stress is known to cause breakouts. Studies have linked it to hormones.
"When someone is stressed, their levels of cortisol, which is the major stress hormone, goes sky-high. And cortisol breaks down collagen and causes inflammation," said Dr. Wechsler.
Which that can lead to common breakouts like psoriasis, adult acne, and rosacea. And collagen breakdown can result in fine lines and wrinkles.
"People are coming in and saying, 'I didn't have this wrinkle last month' or, 'This is my, you know, my post market-crashing wrinkle," said Dr. Wechsler.
So how do you de-stress your skin?
Dermatologist Debra Luftman, author of "The Beauty Prescription," says there are many effective lotions and potions available at the drugstore.
"I tell my patients, keep it simple," said Dr. Luftman.
She says items like Cetaphil helps calm dry, irritated skin. And Dr. Wechsler says a regular work out will also help skin look better.
"When we're exercising, we make more beta endorphins and those are anti-inflammatory," said. Dr. Wechsler.
It can help make your skin look better, and exercise is known to be one of the best stress busters to help survive these tough economic times.
