3 On Your Side: Testing Out Infomercial Products
PHILADELPHIA (CBS 3) ―
Have you ever been tempted to buy a product you've seen in an infomercial, but wondered if it would be a waste of money?
Well, the folks at Good Housekeeping put some of the most popular products to the test. And 3 On Your Side's Jim Donovan shows us some that really performed as advertised.
Each year, the Good Housekeeping Research Institute checks into claims of "As Seen on TV" to see if products really hold their weight, soak it up or keep you connected.
Some products -- like the Pasta 'n More -- received four out of five stars. Pasta and vegetables cooked evenly in the microwave without the hassle of boiling water or using a colander.
"It's especially good for someone who's not terribly fussy, who doesn't want their spaghetti al dente," said Sharon Franke with Good Housekeeping.
Magic jack easily connects a regular phone to a USB port on a computer, letting you make and receive long distance calls in the US and Canada. That can save you a lot of money, but there are a few caveats.
"You have to have your computer on and connected to the internet at all times. So if your computer's off at night, you won't get any phone calls," said Todd Kent with Good Housekeeping.
And Mighty Putty bears its full weight of claims to fix, fill, seal and repair fast and make it last!
According to Good Housekeeping, Mighty Putty didn't pass the test for holding up a shelf. The shelf collapsed under 143 pounds, much lower than the 350 pound claim.
