3 On Your Side: Low Cost Espresso Makers
PHILADELPHIA (CBS 3) ―
Does your morning latte or cup of Joe set you back $2 dollars or more every day? That adds up over time, but you don't have to give it up all together to save money. 3-On Your Side's Jim Donovan shows you how to get the flavor of coffee shop coffee for less.
If you're paying too much for your morning cup of Joe, The Good Housekeeping Research Institute tested 16 espresso machines under $100 and found some that served up coffee shop taste.
Like the $90 Mr. Coffee Pump Espresso, Coffee, and Cappuccino Maker. It makes one or two cups of espresso at a time and has enough pressure to create actual crema.
For a small brunch or dinner party, the Kalorik Espresso Maker Cafeteria Express, which retails for $50, makes up to four cups of coffee at a time. Sharon Franke from Good Housekeeping says, "It makes espresso that has a smooth, deep flavor with just a little touch of foam."
A low-priced option is the stovetop Bialetti Moka 6 Express. It sells for $30 and produces up to 8 ounces of full-bodied Italian-style coffee. Franke says, "Bialetti is for a person who wants black coffee or just plain milk. It doesn't have a frother."
But if you crave the milky topping of a cappuccino, Good Housekeeping recommends the inexpensive $15 Bonjour Café Latte Milk Frother and the pricier $55 Froth au Lait Automatic Hot Milk Frother. Both double the volume of milk in good time.
