3 On Your Side: Testing Out Netbooks
PHILADELPHIA (CBS 3) ―
As kids are heading back to school, many moms and dads are on the lookout for computers for them. The latest trend is Netbooks; small lightweight computers that are great for web browsing and emailing. 3 On Your Side's Jim Donovan shows you some of the newest models that were put to the test by the folks at Good Housekeeping.
Netbooks, a notebook computer with a small processor and screen, are growing in popularity, both for their size and price.
"These Netbooks are great for students to carry into class, for traveling businessmen to take with them, and also mothers when they are in the kitchen to quickly look up a recipe," said Rachel Rothman with Good Housekeeping.
In the Good Housekeeping Research Institute's tests, the sleek, thin and light Asus eee PC 1000Ha ranked number one. It loaded programs and transferred files faster than all the other machines tested.
The Lenovo had the largest screen, in spite of being the most compact of all the Netbooks.
"And its battery life was quite exceptional lasting almost four hours," said Rothman.
The super small MSI Wind u120 offers the most viewable screen in both sunlight and darkness.
But some consumers complained that the keystrokes felt stiff.
And the Dell Mini 10 was the only Netbook tested with a built in port for easy watching of web video.
Choosing a Netbook, over a laptop will probably save you around $250.
