3 On Your Side: Online Tutoring Help
PHILADELPHIA (CBS 3) ―
Do you have school-aged children? Well, it won't be long before they're doing homework and studying for exams.
Schoolwork comes easy for some kids, while others need a little extra help. But tutors can be expensive.
3 On Your Side's Jim Donovan shows you some ways you might be able to get the help they need, free of charge.
Every child is different when it comes to learning and teachers can't always provide one-on-one assistance a student needs to understand the work. But private tutors can be costly. So the folks at Good Housekeeping examined a few Web sites that offer free tutoring to kids of all ages.
"These Web sites are really great for everyone, for review, for learning, for a little extra practice," said Rachel Rothman with Good Housekeeping.
For English students, Purdue University's writing lab offers free lessons in subjects from grammar and mechanics, to logic, to essay writing.
"This one was able to assist on a fourth grade level, on an eighth grade level, and an also through high school," said Rothman.
Intmath.com's Web site is cluttered with ads and banners, but once you figure out the navigation, it thoroughly and clearly explains algebra, trigonometry, probability and calculus.
"On all of the math Web sites, we searched for scientific notation, and who was the one Web site that was able to give us a pertinent answer," said Rothman.
Hippocampus.org reviews subjects including biology math and US history. And cliffnotes.com is just what you'd expect it to be, tutorial overviews. So it might not go into enough depth to clear up a student's questions.
Tutors can cost between $50 and $150 an hour, so looking to free sites online can save you a lot of money.
