On April 16, 1927, Joseph Ratzinger was born in Marktl am Inn, Germany, the son of a policeman. Here a file photo taken in 1943 during World War II shows Joseph Ratzinger as a German Air Force assistant. In 1945 he deserted from the army and, after the war, began studying for the priesthood.
