PHILADELPHIA (CBS 3) ― Do you have trouble sleeping? Before you reach for medication you might want to try something simple like blocking out light.

3 On Your Side's Jim Donovan takes a look at some sleep masks that could be the secret to slumber.

If your room isn't dark enough, sleeping might be difficult.

"One of the good ways to block out light is with a sleep mask. We tested 11 different brands. I looked at how well it blocked light, how well it fit the face, how difficult was it to take on and off, how it washed, and how it looked after multiple washes," said Kathleen Huddy with Good Housekeeping.

Testers thought the design of the mindfold relaxation mask was ridiculous… but the Bucky 40 blinks mask, which comes in different colors, earned top marks because of its shape, comfort and adjustable strap.

"It fit many different types of heads and it had a cut out for the nose," said Huddy.

Good Housekeeping also recommends Mack's Dreamweaver contoured sleep mask, although the Velcro strap sometimes snagged testers' hair.

"The dream essentials mask was the most expensive of the assortment, but our testers liked it hands down. They loved the thick padding that was very soft in the back," said Huddy.

If light isn't your problem, and loud noises are stealing your z's. Good housekeeping recommends foam earplugs from Hearos. The ultimate softness series scored high for muffling ability and comfort.
