3 On Your Side: Elderly Safety

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) ― As our parents grow older many of us worry about them when we can't be with them, especially if they are living alone. But prevention can go a long way to prevent accidents and home hazards. 3 On Your Side's Jim Donovan takes a look at some products that can help keep the elderly a bit safer.

Good Housekeeping researchers had older consumers try a number of safety products.

"Home fires are a leading cause of safety concerns for the elderly and traditional cotton pot holders like these can ignite if left on an open burner. So we decided to test silicone models like these from Lamson and Goodnow. In our testing, the elderly loved them because of their flexibility, and we also found that we were able to remove the hot, cast iron pan from the oven and hold it for a full 60 seconds before you were forced to set it down," said Paul Hope with Good Housekeeping.

Keeping medicine organized can be key to taking it at the right day and time. A seven-day pill dispenser from Borin-Halbich has a lid that's easy for elderly and arthritic hands to open and close.

"We tested this pill dispenser in our labs and we really liked it because it has a snap on lid that allows the pill boxes to be coupled together," said Charmaine Gillespie with Good Housekeeping.

And if your loved ones live alone, it's extremely important they remember to take their medication at the right time. Good Housekeeping found the Cadex Medication Reminder Watch ID can help people remember to take their medicine up to 12 times a day.
