3 On Your Side: Re-Gifting

PHILADELPHIA (CBS 3) ― Have you ever gotten a re-gifted present? It's usually considered kind of tacky.

But in these tough economic times, more people might be tempted to give a gift they already have. 3 On Your Side's Jim Donovan shows us, that re-gifting this holiday season, doesn't have to be so bad.

Re-gifted presents can be a bit of a let down.

"When I got married, I received a Tiffany's bud vase from another couple. And when I opened the box, it still had the card to the other couple in it," said Samantha Cassetty, recipient of a re-gifted present.

But sometimes it can be done tastefully.

"The purpose of giving some one a gift is to give them pleasure. Is to do something kind for someone. So, if you can act in a way that adheres to that principle, and not step on the feelings of the person who originally gave you the gift, and give pleasure to some one as you pass the gift along, that's wonderful," said Randy Cohen with The New York Times Magazine.

"Gifts that are OK to re-gift are those with some sentimental value," said said Janet Siroto with Good Housekeeping. "If, say, your sister-in-law has always admired your favorite punch bowl from your grandmother, that's a terrific thing to give as a gift. A book that your kids loved when they were little, or a DVD of a movie that you've enjoyed so many times.

"Jewelry can be a wonderful thing to re-gift if you've a piece that you're not wearing. This is a perfect example of what not to give. People can tell that a VHS tape like this is something you were just looking to clear off your shelf."

Whatever the gift you're re-giving, one way to make sure it doesn't seem tacky, be sure it has some value to you.
