3 On Your Side: Back To School Supplies

PHILADELPHIA (CBS 3) ― We're kicking off back to school week with a series of reports and first up on the list is school supplies.

Many parents are tackling those long supply lists. But with our struggling economy many of us are trying to figure out how to get the most for our money

3 On Your Side's Jim Donovan kicks off back to school week and takes a look at the deals some stores are offering.

When the little ones head back to school it's the little things that can add up!

"The pencils, the pens, the markers, the binders," said mother of two, Laura Ciccimaro.

Many of the big discount stores are ready with big sales. Experts call it desperation discounting, part of a larger strategy.

"If a shopper buys the item that the retailer's selling at a loss, that that shopper will hopefully will spend another 30 to 40 dollars in the store on things that the store is selling that they make money on," said Burt Flickinger, a retail analyst.

At Wal-Mart it's the 5 cent notebooks that caught Jennifer Saba's eye.

"I grabbed a whole bunch. You can always use more, the kids need them all time," said Saba.

Wal-Mart store manager, Bubba Bohra, says she wasn't alone.

"I mean they are grabbing a whole stack of it instead of buying ones or two's," said Bohra.

And through labor day, Wal-Mart has rolled back prices on school supplies.

They've got ten dollar back packs, crayons are 22 cents for a 24 pack.

The same price goes for Elmer's glue.

Over at Office Depot they've got glue sticks. 99 cents for a four pack.

That's the same price for a six pack of Sharpie Accent highlighters.

Vinyl pencil pouches will run you 20 cents, while compasses will cost you fifty.

Looking for jazzy folders? K-Mart has fashion portfolios for fifty cents. And through labor day, backpacks are 40 percent off.

This week you can get 25 percent off lunch bags at CVS.

While you're picking up groceries at Acme. You may want to stock up on Papermate pens, two 10 packs for a dollar with your super card.

And ten packs of ruled paper for 10 dollars.

All of the prices we mentioned are available this week, and some last through Labor Day.
