SlimShots Appetite Controller

PHILADELPHIA (CBS 3) ― Believe it or not, Americans spend more than $30 billion a year on weight loss products. Now a little drink hitting the market may be able to help you eat less. CBS3's Anne Marie Green has the details.

Introducing Slim Shots, the breakthrough appetite controller in a great tasting liquid shot.

Have you seen this commercial?

The ads promise you'll eat up to 30-percent less every day without feeling hungry just by drinking two shots of a vanilla flavored drink.

So what's in it?

"Slim Shots is an oat oil and palm oil emulsion," Good Housekeeping Nutrition Director Samantha Cassetty.

The manufacturer claims the products triggers the body's natural appetite control mechanism, so you feel satisfied longer, and therefore eat less.

Cassetty and the Good Housekeeping Institute took a look at the product.

"There are about 20 calories in a shot," Cassetty said.

Even at $40 for 30 shots, Slim Shots have been flying off store shelves.

"A short-term clinical study found that some people ate up to 30-percent less within four to eight hours compared to when they didn't take the shots," Cassetty said.

But Cassetty advises these are only short-term studies, done by the manufacturer. And they don't show that people actually lost weight, but only showing that they ate less.

"Also if you eat for emotional reasons, this product likely won't help," Cassetty said.

In a statement, the manufacturer says it stands behind its testing methods, saying participants using the shots ate up to 30-percent less every day.

They also suggest talking to your doctor before starting their program.
