Save Money And Still Look Great

PHILADELPHIA (CBS 3) ― It's estimated that half of all American women color their hair and in this economy, all those trips to the salon can really add up so CBS 3's Liz Keptner takes a look at some helpful tips on how to save money and still look great.

Do-it-yourself products are cheaper, but most women agree when it comes to hair color nothing beats a pro.

"I prefer to have it done by my hair dresser. I just get a little color added just to boost it," explains Liz.

But that quality comes at a hefty price. Depending on where you go, colorists can charge hundreds of dollars a pop and in this economy that's a big chunk of change.

Some women have to visit the salon once a month, but there are a couple of new products on the market that can help you stretch an extra week or two out of every trip.

Because daily washings tend to fade color, Chris Buddock, store director a Sephora at the Lehigh Valley Mall recommends Ojon's rub out dry cleanser. The product costs about $24 and keeps color fresh between salon visits.

"Anytime you use a straight iron and blow dryer that heat is gonna pull the color out of your hair. Something like this, rotating, it will help as far as extending the life of your color," said Buddock, Store Director.

You can also try hair mascara, which runs about $10 a tube. It looks just like the product made for your lashes, but you comb it onto your hair to touch up the roots.

Frank Shipman, owner of TC Salon Spa in Bethlehem also suggests using colored hair powders by Bumble and Bumble.

"Which you can spray in if you don't feel like washing your hair, its wonderful," said Shipman.

Bumble and Bumble makes a spray in several shades and it costs about $35 a can.

All of these products might be worth a shot to save hundreds at the salon.
