3 On Your Side: School Lunch Bags
PHILADELPHIA (CBS 3) ―
Moms and dads, it's almost time to start packing those school lunches. But before you do, you want to make sure you choose a bag that will cut down on germs and keep the food inside safe.
3 On Your Side's Jim Donovan shows you which ones made the grade.
Good old fashioned brown bags might be good for some foods, but anything that needs to be chilled should go inside an insulated lunch bag to help keep germs at bay.
"We tested 26 and we found that the best ones kept food cold at refrigerated temperatures for between two and three hours," said Sharon Franke with Good Housekeeping.
Good Housekeeping says the LL Bean Flip Top Lunch Box is a good choice for keeping food safe.
"It has leather compartments which helps you organize the food. It even has a little compartment on the outside where you can tuck in a pen," said Franke.
The Built Tortuga is made of neoprene. Good Housekeeping says it appeals to older children.
For little ones, they recommend this Wall-E Triangle lunch tote. It has a separate zipper pouch to keep sandwiches from being squished.
Whatever lunch bag you choose, experts say if you're storing anything that needs to be chilled; it's a good idea to include ice packs. And pre-chill juice boxes or other drinks.
