Residents of a New Jersey nursing home are back in their beds after being forced to flee due to a hazmat scare Thursday afternoon.
The Rainbow Nursing Home on Big Oak Road in Pittsgrove, Salem County was evacuated after fears sparked by a pesticide called 'delta dust' that was being used in the building.
"We realized something was wrong when the fire alarm sounded, went to the annunciator panel and found that one of the alarms had triggered," Reginald Goring of the nursing home said.
Shortly after the exterminator left, numerous elderly residents started smelling a strong odor and became sick.
"It went through some of the duct works, went through the facility, so as a precaution, everyone was removed from the facility, we did go in with meters and monitors," Chief Jack DeAngelo said.
The building was evacuated and residents were taken to nearby hospitals to be evaluated as a precaution.
A thorough floor to ceiling scrub of the building was conducted and residents were moved back in during the late night hours. Officials said many residents are on a highly controlled medication and rehabilitation schedule and needed to return.
